Year 6 return: procedures & guidance

    Dear Parents/Carers,

School is now open to Year 6 children returning from June 22nd 2020. The following information outlines procedures in place for this.

We will continue to provide childcare for the EYFS - Y5 children of key workers and identified vulnerable children only, where prior bookings have been confirmed.

School hours, entry and exit for YEAR 6 only

The school timings of 9am - 3.30pm will be in operation for Year 6 although we will operate a flexible arrival and exit system to support this, as follows.

    Entrance

    Exit

    Time

    Surname

    Time

    Surname

    9am – 9.15am

    Mrs Haake’s class

    3pm -3.15pm

    Mrs Haake’s class

    9.15am – 9.30am

    Mr Willis’ class

    3.15pm -3.30pm

    Mrs Willis’ class

Please arrive/exit using the window of times above and drop your child at the middle gate near the front of the school (by Mrs Hutchings’office). If your child has a sibling who is also accessing a key worker place in our school provision, please use the main office for all of your children for entering/exiting school.

The gate on Boaler Street will be open from 9am-9.30am and then 3pm-3.30pm with a staff member on duty. Parents/children should queue using the 2-metre distance rule until children are invited in by staff. The same applies to the end of day.

Any arrival after 9.30am should be via the school office, as usual practice.

Please note: the entrance/exit arrangements may be subject to change as we adjust during phased return and growing numbers. We appreciate your patience with this as we try to ensure that we get this absolutely right.

How to bring your child to school (if accompanied)

Parents will be unable to enter the school building, beyond the gates by Mrs Hutchings’ office. If accompanying children, please adhere to the following:

    • Keep 2 metres apart when queuing
    • Only one adult to queue/collect children
    • No siblings to be brought to pick up (if possible)
    • Quick drop off/pick up – no information to be passed on to staff at this point – this should be emailed to the school office. Staff will need to focus on getting children in and to allocated rooms as quickly and safely as possible.

We ask that parents do not visit the school office for any reason other than to drop off/pick up children and all communication should be via telephone or email, unless urgent.

No child, staff or visitor will be allowed to enter the school under any circumstance if they are displaying any symptoms of coronavirus.

    Child groups (bubbles)

We now have a well-established system of grouping/accommodating children, which has worked well with children of key workers. Children will be in groups of no more than 9 in a bubble, with 1 member of staff; this will not necessarily be their usual class teacher but we hope, as far as we can foresee/plan, that each of the Year 6 staff will be present during some of the time across the final weeks. We will endeavour to group children with friends as much as we can. The children will stay in the same bubble for the remainder of the term, this is extremely important so that we minimise cross contamination.

We have organised for additional classroom spaces to be used to accommodate each of the bubbles. Bubbles will not meet up at break times, as it is essential that they stay as a group for the week, to minimise risk. Use of spaces around school has been carefully timetabled to keep distances between bubble groups.

    Uniform and equipment

Children should wear clothes of their choice. These should be clean on each day to minimise risk of transferring the virus.

No school bags or equipment of any kind (including mobile phones) should be brought to school apart from a packed lunch (in a disposable bag) and a labelled drinks bottle (and a sun hat/sun cream in hot weather). Please note, we will label any bottles that are brought in without a name. Children will also be given personalised resources/stationery to use and keep on their own workstations so that these are not shared between them.

    School lunches

All children should bring a packed lunch in a disposable bag.

    Attendance

Current DFE advice is that no action will be taken against either parents or school if parents decide not to allow their children to attend.

    PPE – face coverings

In line with current scientific advice and guidance, children are not required to wear face coverings. Unless our staff are involved in 1:1 care, they will not wear them either. If this guidance changes centrally, we will inform you. However, if you would like your child to wear a face covering please provide one.

    Good hygiene practices

All children will be asked to clean their hands upon entering the school building and frequently throughout the day. Tables, surfaces and equipment/resources will be regularly sanitised throughout the school day as well as regular cleaning of communal areas and toilets by hygiene staff. Hand sanitiser products will be available for use by staff and children around school and in rooms.

    Child activities and teaching/learning

From 22nd June, staff will return to providing a range of curriculum activities such as basic skills in English and Maths, topic-themed learning such as History, creative activities such as Art/Design or Music as well as French, PE and PSHE.  PLEASE CAN CHILDREN BRING THEIR WORK PACKS INTO SCHOOL ON THE 22ND JUNE AND LEAVE THEM THERE EACH DAY.

Home Learning - not attending school

If your child is not attending, we encourage you to keep in touch with curriculum activities by accessing the home learning packs set by teaching staff.

We hope the above is clear. Getting procedures and routines in place in a time of ever-changing circumstances has been a huge challenge. If arrangements and directions change at short notice, we fully apologise in advance but such is the nature of the current situation. Thank you all so much for your patience, understanding and overwhelming support with this.

You can also see photos of our classrooms and FAQs for parents on the website under Key Information

Finally, I know that there is a huge amount above to take in, but we want you to be reassured of the steps we are taking to minimise the risks to keep everyone as safe as we can. We will continue to remind you of the key messages above by email and by text. Should you have any questions that you feel have not been answered, please do not hesitate to contact school.

We are really looking forward to warmly welcoming our Year 6 child back to school for the last few weeks of their Primary School journey and we are grateful for the opportunity to spend this time with them.

    Kind regards,

    Karen Hutchings

  • Phased re-opening of schools update

    Tue 09 Jun 2020

    Dear Parents & Carers,

    Re: Phased re-opening of schools

    Tuesday 9th June 2020

We have been made aware that the most recent reproduction (R) median value for the North West is reported as being 1.01. The Secretary of State has previously made it clear as one of his 5 tests that the R value should be below 1 before it would be safe for schools to open for more children.

I have contacted the trustees and governing body of New Park Primary School and they have agreed that we will not yet be opening for children in Year 6. Liverpool Local Authority has also indicated to us that they are supportive of schools delaying their wider reopening to children in Year 6.

We will remain open for keyworkers and vulnerable children. However, we will be unable to start increasing our numbers further to include Y6 until we receive further advice or until the rate is once again below 1. We expect to receive advice from Public Health and Liverpool Local Authority as the weeks progress and I will keep you fully informed about when we can re-start our phased re-opening plans, if at all.

No doubt you will have all been preparing your child(ren) for returning to school next week and this decision may affect your ability to work. However, I am sure you will all agree that we must be very careful in this difficult situation and that our number one priority is the health and safety of all of our children, staff and families.

    Kind regards

    Karen Hutchings

  • School Reopening Information - June 1st 2020

    Wed 27 May 2020

SAIL Academy Trust’s Position on Reopening

    Dear Parents /Carers

I’m sure that you will have heard on the television and in the newspapers that the government announced on 10th May that lockdown restrictions could be eased and schools can start to reopen from 1st June for children in Nursery 2, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.

As many of you have expressed to us, either via our texting service, via Twitter or in person as you picked up packs of work, this was a cause of anxiety for many parents. It was also a cause for some concern in Liverpool and the North West in general, as confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 were still particularly high and showed little signs of improvement.

Following the communication from Steve Reddy, Director of Childrens Services about Liverpool City Councils position on school reopening on Friday 15th May, which we shared with you on our website and via Twitter, I would now like to update you with specific information about our schools.

Decisions made regarding our reopening have followed the councilslead, have been considerate of your views and are fully supported by all Trustees, whose views we took into account at a virtual meeting last week. We agree that -

Key Principles for SAIL Academy - Covid-19

    1. The physical wellbeing of staff and children is our utmost priority -

This will be achieved by social distancing of 2m, regular hand hygiene, minimal staffing numbers, careful attention will be paid to start and end times of the day as well as movement around school and there will be no sharing of toys or other equipment.

    2.  The emotional wellbeing of staff and children is high priority - We will achieve this by lots of talk time and utilising activities from Care Corner on our school website.

    3.  Active learning will be available to all children -This will be ensured through all children (those in school, in hubs and at home) being provided with work packs, for those children who attend school, the focus will be on emotional well being and activities that will help us to adhere to the 2m distance rule.

    4.  Welfare of families is a high priority - Those families who choose not to send their children to school will still be in receipt of FSM vouchers, in addition, children in receipt of FSM vouchers will also receive a food parcel. There will be weekly communication with all families with social work involvement and school will continue to reassure parents that there will be no consequences to non-attendance.

In addition, we sent out text messages asking those parents with children in years N2, R, Y1 and Y6 as to whether they would be sending their child back to school if it opens this term. An overwhelming number of parents responded that they would be keeping their child home until they felt it was safe to do so. As a parent this is my view too!

REOPENING OF NEW PARK PRIMARY AND ROSCOE PRIMARY SCHOOLS ON JUNE 1ST 2020.

Our schools will be open on 1st June from 9:00am until 4:00pm as a childcare facility but ONLY to the children (aged 3-11yrs) of key workers who have no safe alternative and to vulnerable children who may not be safe at home i.e. on recommendation by their own social worker.

    Eligibility

*Children of key workers (those with jobs deemed essential to the national infrastructure response during the COVID-19 crisis) if they cannot be looked after safely at home. Please see the list of key workers on the gov.uk website. They are also listed on the letter you received from Steve Reddy.

*Children who are deemed vulnerable by their social worker

    Application for a Place

If you believe your child is eligible based on the above criteria only, you will need to contact school to fill in an application and provide evidence.

As Headteacher, and the person responsible for the safe running of the school, I reserve the right to decline a place with the full support of the Trustees.

I also wish you to know that myself, my staff, the Trustees and Governors, care very much for each child at our school and we would love nothing more than to be at our schools planning all the lovely actives that take place in the summer time. We miss all of the children very much and feel so sad that their school development has been paused in such a way.

It has though, been such a difficult and stressful time for us all, we have tried so hard to provide as much support as we could in these extraordinary and scary times. I am grateful to Liverpool City Council’s Mayor Anderson and Steve Reddy the Director of Children's Services for taking such a strong stance and to help us to protect our children, as based on the current evidence I do not believe it is safe enough to reopen schools more widely than the current provision. I say this because I, as head teacher care so much about your children and each member of my amazing staff.

I would like to thank you, our families for the unwavering support that you have shown us and for all the photos on Twitter showing what you are all up to, these really keep the staff morale up.

I would as always like to thank the SAIL Academy staff for helping to run our Hub since lock down began in March, including school holidays and bank holidays. This has been a huge success and has only served in cementing the two school communities together even further. I am immensely proud to lead such a team of dedicated people who have been working so hard to provide each child with fun and engaging activities as well as taking part in our videos and messages each week.

I am ever thankful that the vast majority of our communities remain safe throughout these dreadful times. However, my heartfelt sympathies do go out to those families and staff members who have lost loved ones.

    Next Steps- The Liverpool Approach

    1. On 28th May, the Government is scheduled to announce whether the 5 measures to indicate a national improvement in the pandemic have been met. It is only then that any schools will be able to reopen to large numbers of children.

    2.  On 1st June, our school will reopen to provide childcare to vulnerable children and children of key workers only. This is only available where there is no safe alternative option for childcare. Those children who do qualify for a place should attend between the hours of 9am and 4pm. Children may wear their own clothes and should bring a packed lunch.

    3. This will be reviewed once school has reopened on the 1st June and we will prepare to introduce Year 6 on 15th June under the guidance and recommendations of LCC and DFE and if it is safe to do so.

    4. There will be further reviews throughout this term to see as and when it is safe for other year groups (Y1, R and N2) to return to school.

I will be in touch with further details on the safe day to day running of our schools in the next week or so as we prepare for further numbers of children.

If you have any worries what so ever please don’t hesitate to call school during the hours of 9am and 4pm or email myself directly at k.hutchings@sail-academy.co.uk.

    Stay safe.

    Warmest regards

    Karen Hutchings
