Year 3 2011/2012

Welcome to Year 3!

    Welcome to Classes 3M and 3E who will be taught this year by Mr Moffatt and Mrs Ellis. Our classroom assistants are Mrs Davies and Mrs Crewe. Between now and July, as well as improving our literacy and numeracy skills, we will be learning all about the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, both fearsome warrior peoples who invaded this country and then chose to settle here to make a better life for themselves. During their time in year 3 the children will have the opportunity to visit a Celtic Roundhouse , meet a Roman soldier and spend the day in school working with a Viking. 
 
    In the first week of June the children will be doing tests to see how much progress they have made and where they are compared to the national average for their year group, so practising their reading and discussing the stories at home would be really helpful. For maths it would be beneficial if they worked towards the targets in their target books, as rapid recall of basic number bonds and multiplication tables means they can work quicker, as the tests are timed from year 3 upwards.
    
   Homework is given out on a Friday. The children receive spellings , home writing and a piece of maths. They have a whole week to practise their spellings as they are tested the following Friday. Writing and maths work need to be returned by the following Wednesday. 

 The children will take part in various physical activities through the year and will need an indoor PE kit on Mondays and a suitable outdoor PE kit for a Tuesday. 

In science we will be covering topics on materials, rocks and soils, magnetism and light and shadow. The children will carry out some practical activities in order to enhance their understanding of the subject. 

The children will also continue to learn French as part of the curriculum. They will learn how to ask and answer questions , count to 31, the colours, some animal names , some body parts, the days of the week and months of the year. 

Our well stocked ICT suite will be used to search for information and develop keyboard skills to enable them to carry out various tasks. They will use the computers to reinforce learning in other areas of the curriculum , particularly maths, science and literacy.
