Hello and welcome to 2E's class page. Here you can find valuable information about what your children are learning this term.
In English the children will be learning about familiar settings. As 13th September 2016 marks 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl we will begin the term reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We will start by describing Charlie's house and the town it is situated in. We will then write descriptions of some of the characters from the book. All children will continue to enjoy daily spelling, punctuation and grammar lessons as well as practising their handwriting and phonics every morning.
In Maths the children will be counting in 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's as well as halves and quarters. They will be introduced to place value and will learn how to partition two digit numbers in different ways. They will start to reason about addition and subtraction and will use estimation to check their answers.
Our topic this term will be Chocolate. On 16th September 2016 we will be visited in school by chocolate-by-design from Chesterfield. In the workshops we will learn about the history of chocolate, where cocoa beans come from and we will design and make our own delicious chocolates.
In Geography we will learn about the oceans and continents. We will study Ghana in detail and learn about the journey cocoa beans take to reach chocolate factories in the UK. In History we will research George Cadbury. We will discover how he concerned himself with the quality of life of his employees and built the factory town known as Bournville.
In Design and Technology we will design and make a variety of chocolate cookies and in Art we will make sweet wrappers.
RE will involve exploring different religions beliefs in God and in PSHE we will learn about rail, road and water safety.
In French we will develop our vocabulary through making introductions and asking questions.
Everyday materials will be our science topic. We will identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses. We will then find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
The children will continue to have PE lessons every Monday with Miss Beaumont. This term they will be focusing on basic fitness and playing matball. As the children will have another PE lesson during the week, please ensure your child brings their PE kit to school on Monday and leaves it in school all week.
Homework will be sent home every Friday. Please return it to school the following Monday. Spellings will be sent home once a week on a Monday. The weekly spelling test will take place on a Friday. Please practise 2, 5 and 10 timetables along with the Year 2 common exception words throughout the week with your child. Handwriting practice sheets will be sent home throughout the week.
Reading books will be sent home every night. Please take time to listen to your child read at home every evening, even if they have read the book before. Reading is the gateway to all learning so please take time to share the children's reading books with them. Ask them questions such as,
Who is your favourite character? What do you think will happen next? Why do you think that happened? Have you read any other books like this before? Who does that character remind you of? What sort of a book is this?
I am looking forward to a fun and successful term with 2E and have high hopes for all of your children. We work hard but always take time to enjoy ourselves. If you have any concerns or are uncertain about anything at all please do not hesitate to speak to me either before or after the school day.
